#20 — Blue Boy

Blue Boy by Rakesh Satyal
Rating: 3/5
  • About an Indian-American boy growing up in Cincinnati and having to cope with being the most colorful being in the room (which takes on multiple meanings throughout the book)
  • The story reads quickly and comes off as a quirky memoir (which it isn’t)– the stories are funny and cute but without the benefit of a typical memoir’s moments of self-reflection and analysis
  • Although I wasn’t bullied or remotely resemble Kiran (the main character) in life, I felt his pain– the depiction of Ohio, Ohioans, and Ohio-ness was pretty spot on– it was almost its own character
