#83 — The Door

The Door by Magda Szabo
Rating: 4/5
  • Translated into English from Hungarian, it is about a writer who is married to another writer;  they hire a housekeeper once their writing careers resume after a long hiatus, due to political circumstances
  • It’s a seemingly simple story with lots of hidden complexity in it– the characters aren’t very likable nor is the narrator all that reliable, but still sucks you in. The dog was by far the best character
  • The ending was perplexing– was the furniture bequeathed to the author an act of love or contempt? In other words, did Emerence know what the narrator would actually inherit when it was given away?
