#81 — Switched On: A Memoir of Brain Change and Emotional Awakening

Switched On: A Memoir of Brain Change and Emotional Awakening by John Elder Robinson
Rating: 4/5
  • Written by the same author of Look Me in the Eye; both books focus on Robinson’s experience living with autism/Aspergers, but this book focuses on his experience undergoing an experimental treatment called TMS
  • TMS not only changes him, it alters his childhood memories and relationships with those closest to him; it is not hard to get excited for him at first, then worried and depressed with him towards the end of the experiment
  • The book brings out a lot of very interesting discussion points, including how and when to draw the line between “fixing” a condition/ailment and embracing differences. I liked the juxtaposition of philosophy and soul-bearing, along with the science and in-depth technological explanations– it seems to very much fit the merging of his “new” and “old” self
