#69 — Sweetbitter: A Novel

Sweetbitter: A Novel by Stephanie Danler
Rating: 4/5
  • Yet another story about the restaurant industry– A Kitchen Confidential but from the female perspective. It was also from the waitstaff and not the cook’s viewpoint
  • As a child of parents in the restaurant industry, the story rings true– it is a story about people living in the margins, people who are living fully and dangerously in the now. It is also a love story about New York City and the transplants who make their life there
  • The story depicts a certain type of self destructive woman (not limited within the confines of the restaurant industry) that we know all too well… however, it does so in a way that isn’t too self-pitying
  • The book maintains a fine balance between sounding pretentious and just being really passionate about food/wine/etc
