VCTC Urban Environmental Challenge (4.10.16)

Course: Two loops around who knows where in Van Cortlandt Park

Weather: 38F but sunny

Pace: 10:12/mile

  • Organized by the Van Cortlandt Track Club, it is a small race, relatively affordable ($20 + $2.25 admin fee), and easy to get to using public transportation (last stop on the 1 train)
  • A start time of 10 a.m. is nice for those who hate getting up early on the weekends
  • A race sponsor is Lloyd’s Carrot Cake (top 3 winners of their age group gets a cake) so the start of the race was led by a guy who dressed up like a carrot; he ended up being a race marshall. The park has a giant tortoise and hare statue, so 2 of the course marshals dressed up as one of each
  • While the trail wasn’t too wet from yesterday’s rain, the trees were not cut back so I almost got my eye taken out by some branches; the fallen trees blocking the trail created some interesting obstacles; the loose rocks and steep hills also kept things interesting
