#23 — Portnoy’s Complaint

Portnoy’s Complaint by Phillip Roth
Rating: 3/5
  • The entire novel is a psychotherapeutic rant by the main character about why he’s such a messed up adult
  • The book was riddled with the type of humor that mirrors the movie American Pie  — the 1960s, east coast, Jewish American version, that is. Just replace apple pie with chicken liver
  • It was funny at first, but the writing style gets to you after a while and become a crutch. Like a rich cheesecake that is delicious on the first bite, the more of it you have, the more disgusting and bored you feel
