#85 — A Thousand Acres

A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley

  • Rating: 4/5
  • Unlike the trilogies (of which I’ve read two out of three), you don’t feel an overwhelming sense of time passing — so even though this is a shorter book, you get to know people more intensely
  • What was most effective about this book was experiencing the subtle yet dramatic shifting of the main character’s perspective throughout the book. As she changes and others seemingly don’t, her description of their actions reveal a deeper analysis of those around her over time, as seen through her new and sharper-edged view of the world
  • Not to knock my midwestern roots, but didn’t think there was much to say about farm life. I am wrong!
