PA Grand Canyon Half Marathon (7.25.15 & 7.26.15)

Rock the Canyon Half 2015

Course: down, up, and around the rim of a canyon, mostly on gravel roads that are shaded by big trees that pretty much obstruct the view, but keeps you cool

Weather: ?? Was freezing at 5 a.m. in the morning, felt cool at 7 a.m. at the beginning of the race, and warmed up considerably by the end of the race

Day One Pace: 10:42/mile

Day Two Pace: 12:09/mile

Did the 1/2 and 1/2 Rock the Canyon, which means you do back-to-back half marathons; one on Saturday, and the second one on Sunday

Was bussed to the start; the driver didn’t know where he was going, but the people riding on the bus did, thank goodness

Had nice weather for a July race; the course was shaded and there was a nice breeze from the nearby streams

The course was very hilly (compared to NYC that is). Resist the temptation to barrel down the steep downhills to make up for lost time; your knees and ankles will thank you later

The first mile had a switch-back, so you had to be careful to stay out of the way of the front runners. There was a turnaround at mile 8~9 as well

The last three miles are the most punishing as it was almost all uphill; by the end, I was gasping like a dying fish (story of my life)

Post-race offerings were pretty healthy by most standards. It was delivered in a cardboard lunch box along with the medal and my favorites included chips and humus, soy nuts, bananas, granola bars, and a small square of chocolate
