#35 — Carthage

Carthage by Joyce Carol Oates

  • Rating: 2/5
  • It is Gone Girl crossed with Redeployment and isn’t as good as either one of those books
  • Zeno is the only character that you could relate to and sympathize with, and he’s a male character which was surprising — usually JCO writes the most compelling narratives from the female perspective
  • Unsure how the visit to a maximum security prison could trigger such an emotional reaction in the main character, when none of the other events preceding it had any impact on them at all
