#11 — We are Not Ourselves

We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas

  • Rating: 3/5
  • Started off like Angela’s Ashes or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn — seems like the book will be about a down-on-their-luck, poor Irish family — complete with drunk fathers, resourceful mothers, scrappy kids, etc. etc.
  • Then the book takes a very different turn, and is almost entirely about a family dealing with a family member dying a slow death by Alzheimer’s.
  • It is made more depressing by the fact the character is a neuroscientist — it’s a bit overkill
